In my last entry I talked about my friend Bob who, in the past semester, enrolled in an online college. Recently, the two of us began making phone calls trying to register voters for the upcoming Pennsylvania Primaries. One woman who had also been making phone calls asked Bob and I for a ride home.
During the ride, the woman began to tell us about her son, a sixteen-year-old who was graduating early from high school. When I asked what school her son attended she proudly said “Penn Foster High School!” Within an instant I became the minority in the car; I was the only person who was neither attending an online school nor had an immediate family member doing so. The idea of online students being in the minority was thrown out the window. Although I was only with two other people at the time I couldn’t help but wonder what my predicament says about the future of traditional campus-based schools.
